THE CHRISTMAS DRIFTER

He didn't move for several minutes. A dog with a severe limp hobbled down the alley toward the garbage cans. When he saw the man, he growled, perhaps expecting another rock. Pausing a moment, his big head cocked to one side, his ear perked forward and . . . his tail (what there was of it) began to wiggle.
